This Guitar Is For Sale
"This guitar is for sale, I'll let her go cheap She's pretty to look at but she don't earn her keep She can roar like the west wind, she can weep, she can wail But the tunes that she plays just ain't selling today This guitar is for sale" - John Prine from Twisted Turnable Man: A Musical Tribute to The Songs of Shel Silverstein (2010) |

American Tune
"We come on the ship they call The Mayflower We come on the ship that sailed the moon We come in the age's most uncertain hours And sing an American tune Oh, and it's alright, it's alright, it's alright You can't be forever blessed Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day And I'm trying to get some rest That's all I'm trying to get some rest" - Paul Simon from There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973) |

Deeper Well
"So, I'm getting rid of the habits that I feel are real good at wasting my time No regrets, baby I just think that maybe it's natural when things lose their shine So other things can glow I've gotten older, now I know How to take care of myself I've found a deeper well" - Kacey Musgraves from Single | February 8, 2024 |

Respect Yourself
"If you're walking 'round think'n that the world owes you something 'cause you're here You goin' out the world backwards like you did when you first come here yeah Keep talkin' bout the president, won't stop air pollution Put your hand on your mouth when you cough, that'll help the solution" - The Staple Singers from Be Altitude: Respect Yourself (1972) |

"Old friends, old friends Sat on their park bench like bookends A newspaper blown through the grass Falls on the round toes of the high shoes of the old friends Can you imagine us years from today Sharing a park bench quietly? (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding
"As I walk through this wicked world Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity I ask myself, 'Is all hope lost? Is there only pain and hatred and misery?' "I don't mind working, 'Cause I used to be jerking off most of my time in bars, I've been a cabbie and a stock clerk and a soda-fountain jock-jerk And a manic mechanic on cars. It's nice work if you can get it, now who the hell said it?" - Tom Waits from Small Change (1976) |

Tequila
As I mentioned last week, some songs have spectacular videos that deserve to be seen. Such is the case with the latest update to our VIDEOS page. We are featuring Fumi Watanabe's fabulous One-Person-Band interpretation of "Tequila" originally made popular in 1958 by The Champs. The Latin-inspired surf instrumental reached #1 on the pop and R&B charts! But I love the creativity, musicality and just pure fun of this version. Lil' story: The Lil' Cow Band decided it would be fun to play this song at one of our children's/family music concerts in Lake Bluff's downtown gazebo. But we had everyone join in with the refrain of "Gazebo" instead of "Tequila" - just to keep any over reacting folks from bothering us... |

A Change In Plans
During last week's show I mentioned that we would be taking this week off from curating and producing a new show. This is still true, sort of, but thanks to the suggestion of fellow Community DJ Joe Velez (A. Tad Bonkers, Saturdays 9am - 1pm) we will rebroadcast two shows from The Vault. Enjoy and we'll be back on Tuesday, April 4 with a new show. |

Sometimes I Wonder
• What in the world is wrong with people? From some of our world leaders who care more about power than people to our own political leaders seek their own forms of power rather than the well being of their constituents. I just don't get it. • I do know (as cliché as it may sound) that music is one of the unifying forces in the world. Everywhere you look you see the results of peace and understanding as people collaborate and unify around music. • Okay, I'm off my soapbox... Today's show was especially fun to put together. If you missed the early broadcast, visit our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page to catch today's and past shows. |

How Strong Is Your Love?
• If there was ever a time to reach out and show some love it would be now. With so many institutions and relationships in peril I'm not sure what else could help. • Anger certainly is not the key. If not turned into positive action it will only negatively affect us. • As Weezer sings, "Love is the answer - makes no difference what you've heard." • Trust in the word. |
February 8 - Update
Cheap Therapy
• To say it's been a rough couple of years is almost an understatement. Don't you agree? • So my point this week is no matter who we are, no matter where we are, we all need to find a way to take good care of our emotional side - a side many of us think will just figure itself out. I don't believe that's the case. Just like most everything, it takes effort. • Simply stated - finding great music to listen to provides that safe harbor for me and keeps me centered. I prescribe it wholeheartedly! |
February 1 - Update
Yes, Better Times Will Come
• Janis Ian's last song on (what she calls) her last album gives us all a dose of what we all need and that is optimism. But we should know by now that nothing will change, better times will not come, unless we get involved. And, of course, it starts with each of working on the changes that need to be addressed. • I know I'm motivated and inspired to do whatever I can to make this world a better place. Trite? Cliché? Maybe so, but if that's what it takes, I'm onboard. • Here's to a great February and for a positive, productive 2022. |
January 25 - Update
Life Itself - Another Reflection
• The photo for this week's show was taken by my wife, Teddi, at the shoreline of Lake Michigan in Lake Bluff, Illinois. • This is a place where we go for reflection, to get recharged and just breathe. I hope you have a space where you can go, too. • For many of us, music also serves a vital purpose and place where we can reflect and appreciate all the blessings we have been given. • Please take care of yourself. You need it and you owe it to yourself. We all know that it's not easy out there... |
January 18 - Update
What Kind of World? It's Up To Us
• Each of us should be thinking about what we can do to help make our world a healthy and sustainable place for our children and their future. Cliché? I hope not. • It’s just mind boggling how greed, selfishness and misinformation can quickly destroy a thriving culture. I know I’m getting off topic for Breakfast Jams, but folks - this is getting serious. That’s all… • On a brighter note, I am excited to share the music Joanie Leeds points to in her wonderful article for American Songwriter magazine titled “Grammy Winner Joanie Leeds Shares Her Top 10 Children’s Songs That Will Change the World.” |
January 11 - Update
Hoping for a Happier New Year!
• So many families are feeling like they've just been kicked in the gut with this COVID pandemic that it really is taking a toll on all of us. So what do we do? How do we cope? • I don't have all the answers but I have been reflecting on it a lot lately and for me it's a matter of steering myself back to gratitude. And it's in the music - as I'm listening to Ituana's version (from Big Little Lies) of "You Can't Always Gets What You Want." • Take good care of yourself and others, too! |
January 2 - Update
Blame the nasty COVID-19
• Not really cancelled, just rescheduled. • Good news is I’m on the mend and plan to be back next week. • Out of utmost caution and because I've grown accustomed to having control of the narration segments, I am still pre-recording shows for broadcast. • Our theme “Under Covers” was a lot of fun to put together. I had all the playlists set but just didn't have the energy to create the DJ threads, hence the rescheduling. |
December 20 - Update
Program Notes
1. Yes, it's true we are taking a couple of weeks off for a little vacation time. 2. As mentioned below, we have created a special combined playlist that features all the songs from our December 14 show. So if you're looking for some eclectic and fun holiday music to play visit the SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. Best part? No DJ interludes, just music! 3. Happy Holidays to all and thank you once again for your support of Breakfast Jams. Now, send me a request! |
December 14 - Update #2
Look who stopped by...
• Santa took a quick break from his workshop and just dropped a fantastic playlist here on our website! It is the Breakfast Jams "It's A Holiday" show but WITHOUT all that DJ banter. What could be better? • You'll find it on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. • Enjoy and remember to spread good cheer and share good music! |
December 14 - Update
It's A Holiday
• But as we know, many folks out there are facing real challenges this time of year. So my hope is that we all can be a little more gentle, a little more tolerant and a whole lot more loving - not just during this holiday season, but well into 2022. • Programming Note: We are taking a holiday break here at Breakfast Jams. We will be back spinning some great tunes on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. • Finally, let's all try to find and make some peace on earth. |
December 7 - Update
Wouldn't It Be Nice
• It is nice! "It" has so many different meanings to so many different people. It is all about context. For me, this context is attitude - your worldview. You know. The glass half empty, half full idea. • One thing for certain is that music has the power of keeping my attitude on the bright side and even elevate my mood when necessary. • The lesson here boys and girls is to let music be there for you. |
November 30 - Update
Music - Like The Weather
• It's a statement, not a question. Sometimes it's hot, other times not. Sometimes it touches you deeply, sometimes you don't want to touch it at all. And it can vary from moment to moment. • I hope the musical menu we offer is as varied as our midwest weather and I hope your palette appreciates it and ENJOYS it. Now if you're anything like me you may value lots of styles and genres - but probably not all of them. Yes? • I hope you find a wide and varied set of songs and musical genres on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. Check it out. |
November 23 - Update
Sometimes You Have To Look Hard
• This week, like so many recently, has been one that makes my head ache and shake with all the upsetting news that seems to keep on coming. I don't know about you, but if I didn't have some foundational pieces in place like friends, family and a little faith, I might feel distressed and a bit depressed. But I know that there is a lot more good in this world than what is being fed to us through the news of the day. This keeps me going. Hopefully, you, too. • Have a song or artist you would to hear? It's easy as filling out our Request a Song form. Hope to hear from you. |
November 16 - Update
One Light, One Sun
• Raffi's song "One Light, One Sun" remains one of my favorite songs for children and families to enjoy together. Such a simple message, but such a powerful one, too. • And that is what is so important about music for children. It presents a platform for families to discuss the BIG and important issues. Some goes for Brady Rymer's song "Under The Big Umbrella." • Of course, you can find both songs in this week's show. Visit our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page for more. |
November 9 - Update
With a Side Dish of Tasty Tunes
• What is this mysterious, magical thing called music? However it can be defined it serves it's purpose well. What I mean is nothing gets my day started better or gives my mood a jump start quite like music. What a blessing! Don't you agree? • The pure power of music is an obvious reason (but worth mentioning) behind our little radio show we call Breakfast Jams. • Feel free to submit a song request, listen to and/or browse through all of our SONGS | PLAYLISTS. You will find lots o' tasty tunes! |
November 2 - Update
Yes, Let The Music Play
• When I was serving as a music educator a primary goal was to deliver a diverse and varied diet of music to the ears of my young listeners. And I was often surprised at how open and receptive they were to music and songs they had never heard. As I sit here listening to today's show I realize that this is the same goal at Breakfast Jams. • So thanks for listening and don't forget to let me know what YOU WOULD LIKE TO HEAR. Here's the Request a Song link. • Reminder: All shows/playlists are archived here. |
October 26 - Update
Not too Scary
• Our annual Halloween Extravaganza is always fun. There are so many songs that just seem to fit into our varied playlists: From orchestral pieces and Ella Fitzgerald to Tom Chapin and Nina Simone and from Santana and The Police to Stevie Wonder to Bobby "Boris" Picket & The Crypt Kickers - they all live happily together on Breakfast Jams. • Just a reminder that all of our Breakfast Jams shows and playlists are archived on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. • Thanks for your support. |
October 19 - Update
Like it Eclectic?
• If so, you will enjoy this week's show. • One theme we haven't explored is the influence of classical music on rock and pop music. There are many great examples and the three we picked to spotlight were songs from Procul Harum, Paul Simon and Billy Joel. • Next week's show will be a a fun-filled Halloween Extravaganza! • Browse SHOWS | PLAYLISTS to listen and view past shows. |
October 12 - Update
Once In A While
• Everyone needs a little help once in a while and this week's show is dedicated to getting the word out that our good friend, Elliott Delman, is in need of our support. • It is a story we've all heard before - an incredible person who has spent his life being a true and trusted friend to all faces serious medical and financial issues. (See October 1 update below) • Even if you have no idea who idea Elliott is, if you are able, please consider donating to his GoFundMe campaign. Every dollar will be greatly appreciated and will benefit Elliott. |
October 5 - Update
Radio Radio (Left of the Dial)
• I've got to admit - curating Breakfast is lots o' fun, as you can imagine. • The process is interesting. Sometimes I have a theme I want to capture so I go looking for songs that speak to that theme. Other times songs find me and I build around that song. Lots of ways to make a delicious meal. • I am especially excited about next week's show which will be dedicated to our amazing and resilient friend, Elliott (see below). |
October 1 - Update
Our Dear Friend, Elliott
• Simply put, Elliott needs our help. • Our courageous, strong, determined and inspiring friend is going to need our financial help. He has spent the last 140+ days in the hospital (yes, you read that right...). He is fighting the multiple myeloma which decided to take up lodging in his body. • As you can imagine, the financial hit alone is something so devastating it could take the best of us down. And that's where we can step in and lend a hand. • Please consider making a donation to the GoFundMe campaign (see below for link) and rest assured that every dollar raised will directly benefit Elliott. And join us on October 16 for a great evening of music! • Elliott is hoping to be out of the hospital sometime near the middle of October. We want him not to have to worry about finances for a while so he can concentrate on healing, getting stronger and be that friend, teacher and wonderful soul that is Elliott Delman. |
Click here to go to the GoFundMe campaign for Elliott and please help spread the word.
September 28 - Update
What? Me worry?
• No doubt there are enough things to worry about in today's world. But if we all just put on some good music I think it will help, a little. • But we need to keep our eyes, ears and mind open in order to know the truth and be able to act accordingly. Am I being too subtle? C'mon people! • If you missed our show this week, remember you can listen and view all playlists on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. |
September 21 - Update
Welcome to Fall
• As I was listening to this week's show, I was reminded of how diverse and eclectic my own musical tastes are. From Tom Petty, Shawn Colvin and The Stones to The Killers, Allen Toussaint and Horace Silver (just to name a few) we cover a wide spectrum of kids/family music, rock classics and current jams. • Remember we welcome requests and enjoy hearing from you. Click here to request a song. • And remember our shows and playlists are archived. Check it all out on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. |
September 14 - Update
All Good Things (and some bad things, too) Must Come To An End
• And so it is with summer. But we've got great music to help up ease into the next season. It sure helps me. • We are still prerecording our Breakfast Jams shows for broadcast. I do miss the excitement of doing the show LIVE but prerecording it has it's advantages. First, I can delete and rerecord any narration mistakes (which happen a lot) and we can archive the show for future listening. So we'll probably stay this way for a while - until we're instructed that we must go LIVE. Stay tuned and thanks for listening! |
September 7 - Update
Back To School Means We Are Back, Too
• I often had the attitude that summer would never end but, of course, it always does. So we are back broadcasting Breakfast Jams. And excited to do so. • For the time being, our show will continue to be prerecorded though we plan on being back LIVE in the studio soon. Each has it's own pros and cons, but having the show already recorded makes it much easier to offer our rebroadcast on Thursdays. • Remember shows and playlists are archived here. |
August 7 - Update
May 25 - Update
Well, That's A Wrap
• Yep, this was our last show of this school year. We are already working on music for next school year and are looking forward to having Breakfast Jams back on the air again in the fall. • A big thank you to all that tuned in and were kind enough to send along your encouraging messages. Please know that I sincerely appreciate your kind words and thoughtful recommendations, requests and suggestions. • And a special thank you to Dave Park, the Lake Forest College radio station student management, and all the community DJs for your continued support of Breakfast Jams. |
May 18 - Update
Let's Play Two
• It really is a much different experience for me listening to a show I put together days ago as opposed to doing the show live in the studio. When broadcasting live I seem to be better at reacting to the previous set of music but when I pre-record the show I can edit my banter as needed. So I guess I enjoy elements of both. • Next week is our last Breakfast Jams show of the school year. We will take the summer off, recharge and be back ready for some great shows once the school years starts up again. Hopefully all kiddos will be back in school! • Remember all shows are archived on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. |
May 11 - Update
May As Well Play Some Good Tunes
• It's interesting where all the ideas for songs come from. I mean some of the music I play is from my ever growing list of "let's play this sometime" and some (thank goodness) are suggestions from listeners. And others just seem to find their way to me... • The hunt is sometimes the most rewarding. Browsing playlists from the New York Times to Spotify or taking note of something great I hear from other media sources is fun and rewarding. My challenge is to not try to force it - let the game come to me, as they say. • Anyway, nothing too prolific today, just thinking out loud. |
May 4 - Update
May + Music = Feeling Good
• I hope the coming of spring helps uplift your spirits. I know it does mine and Lord knows we all probably need it. So it was especially fun to curate this week's Breakfast Jams. • And our lil' radio show could not exist without your support. Your kind words and encouragement are much appreciated, so thank you! • Please remember that all Breakfast Jams are archived with full audio and detailed playlists on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. |
April 27 - Update
Something New Something Old
• Vintage Beatles then some new Paul McCartney - what a great way to start a beautiful April morning I love how Sir Paul is staying current with his collaborations with folks like Beck and Phoebe Bridgers. • I was also surprised at how much I enjoyed hearing Young Shakespeare the new release by Neil Young. It's from a concert series he did in 1971 when he was 25. Great songs and his voice was sounding fabulous, too. |
April 20 - Update
Time of the Season
• The tunes were starting to pile up on the ol' music shelves and it was time to play some of the great music that I have saved since the beginning of Breakfast Jams. So this week we are doing a little spring cleaning and just like the kind we do around the house it felt good to do it. • We were also able to feature some requests that we didn't get to last week which felt good, too. Keep those requests and recommendations coming! • Finally, remember all shows are archived HERE. |
April 13 - Update
Poetry or Poetic
• It is kind of difficult for me to put my finger on exactly what is poetic. Does it have to be poetry to be poetic? Of course not. I suppose it is simply a personal thing. Something that touches you on some level that is almost undefinable. It just has that je ne sais quoi. How's that for being poetic? • Anyway, as to be expected, I gathered more songs and music that loosely fit under the "Be Poetic" umbrella than I could fit into one two-hour show. So next week we will spotlight more of the requests and recommendations. Be sure to tune it. • And remember that all our Breakfast Jams shows are archived with full audio and detailed lists on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. |
April 6 - Update
Wide and Varied
• The more I curate Breakfast Jams the more I realize a couple of things. One is that that I enjoy music of all sorts, styles and eras. • Another is I can't get the "teacher" out of me because I view much of what, and how, I present our shows as an opportunity to share and maybe get our listeners excited about something they might not have ever heard before. • Finally, I have always felt that if parents/adults ever listened to some really great children's music, they would develop an appreciation for this genre and the dedicated artists. Onward! |
March 30 - Update
Whoa... That Was Wild
• Maybe the most eclectic, diverse and spectrum bending show yet! We spotlighted (1) Grammy award winners that were not featured on the televised broadcast, (2) outstanding LIVE performances from the Grammy show, (3) two sets featuring a variety of wonderful children's music music artists, and (4) new music from Iggy Pop, Van Morrison, retro hits from the 60s, 70's and more! • Next week's show is shaping up to be as wide and varied as today's, so if you like your music served up with lots o' exciting twists and turns, be sure to tune in. Check out past shows here. |
March 23 - Update
Taking It Easy This Week
• We hope everyone gets the chance to have some kind of break this spring from what has been the most challenging year of many of our lives. Couple of Reminders: • Since we went to remote broadcasting in October all shows are archived here with detailed playlists. • We love to honor requests, so click here to give us yours. |
March 16 - Update
Truth Be Told - It's NOT Easy...
• Bein' green, or a person of color, or living through a pandemic, or (fill in the blank). These times are certainly a test of faith and perseverance, judgement and action. But I am more confident everyday that we will pull through this terribly challenging pandemic, but we must ALL do our part. Can I hear an Amen? • My hope is that music serves you well during this time, as well as connecting with nature, exercising, eating well, meditation or whatever works for you. And please take care of each other! • All Breakfast Jams shows are archived here. |
March 9 - Update
A Couple of Sets Turn Into Six!
• What started out as a few sets to spotlight Women's History Month quickly became almost a full show. What a delight it was to curate this show! • We did, of course, squeeze in a couple of great sets for kids (and families), too. • Check out this week's show and others on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. |
March 2 - Update
We're Still Rockin' Out!
• There were so many songs that we couldn't fit into last week's Rock 'n' Roll extravaganza that I felt compelled to play some of them this week - at the risk of getting lots o' push back! • So to reply to "Hey man, you didn't play any Dead songs," there's a special three song set with some classic Grateful Dead. Whew! • As always, our shows are archived with full audio and detailed playlists. Visit our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page for all the latest. |
February 23 - Update
But I Like It...
• Well, that was fun! A real trip through time that certainly brought back a lot of memories for me. • I know I am going to get some push back because some pals will say, "I didn't hear any Grateful Dead" orr "Why didn't you play (fill in blank)?" • Foreseeing their concern I have 4 sets ready for next week's show with a bunch of those great rockin' tunes that didn't make it into today's show. So there you go... • Remember all songs are archived on SHOWS | PLAYLISTS. |
February 16 - Update
Snow Day!
• If you are living in so much of the USA that is experiencing this February winter storm I hope you are safe and sound! • Personally, I find that great music lifts me above my immediate weather challenges. We've had enough snow around Chicago that most of feel "enough is enough." • As far as this week's theme, there is enough great music to support Black History Month that we could go all day! That was the challenge in creating this week's Breakfast Jams. • Be sure to visit SHOWS | PLAYLISTS for archived broadcasts. |

Whole Lotta Love for Children's Music
• I love how diverse "children's" music has become, as it should be! This has not always been the case. So when we get to spotlight diverse artists for our diverse nation of children, it's a good thing! • Another good thing is the new children's music is MUSICALLY diverse (and hip), too. I mean just look at the wide spectrum we played today! It has always been important that adults can groove along with the music for children. That's also not always been the case. • So, the best children's music is loved by the kiddos and appreciated by adults at the same time. |
February 2 - Update
Rockin' The Positivity
• Music is the universal remedy for those mood swings we all have, don't you agree? So, to that end this week we danced with the theme of Staying Positive. • If you were not able to tune in this morning remember (1) we rebroadcast Breakfast Jams on Thursday mornings and (2) all shows are archived (with full audio) along with each show's playlist. Visit our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page for all the info. • Next week's theme is Gotta Love February. If you have any requests, let me know. |
January 26 - Update
More Tunes Than We Could Fit In...
• it just shows that there is so much great music out there that it's impossible to get to it all. I hope to squeeze in one more LIVING IN THE U.S.A. set in next week's show. • Speaking of next week's show, our theme will be STAYING POSITIVE. If you have any requests, let me know. Go to our REQUEST A SONG page. • Miss a show? Check out the SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page to listen to and browse playlists from past shows. |
January 19 - Update
We Need BIG DREAMS
• I am writing this post on the day before Inauguration Day in the U.S.A. And I don't know about you, but I'm just kind of holding my breath hoping and praying it is a safe and peaceful week. • Next week our theme will be LIVIN' IN THE U.S.A. as we will feature songs that spotlight a variety of different places across our country - songs as diverse and as colorful as our nation. • Remember - past shows and playlists are archived on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. Enjoy! |
January 12 - Update
Our New Year is Off With a BANG!
• "What a week" is about all I can say... • I will admit our country's fragile state of affairs certainly influenced the playlists I created and songs I chose to feature. "It's Not Flag Day" and "Georgia (Still) On My Mind" are two obvious examples. • On a brighter note and with our kids in mind, there is a whole bunch of great, new music out there for our kids to enjoy. • As a reminder, today's full show audio and playlists can be found on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. |
January 6 - Update
Two New Videos!
• Check out the new John Prine Tribute Recording video featuring Nathaniel Rateliff, Shemika Copeland, Keb' Mo' and Jim James singing "I Remember Everything." Thanks to Terri Hemmert for sharing this gem! • And "Community" by Kira Willey has fast become one of my favorite songs for kids! I know parents will appreciate this song, too. • Just click on the VIDEOS page link! |
January 5 - Update
New Morning!
• Each new year brings with it new hope and optimism and my wish this year, more than any in the past, is that we all find a way to show a little more compassion toward each other. • Personally, I am grateful for the power of music to help me step out of my day-to-day concerns and feel some of the light and warmth that music brings. I hope it serves as meaningful for you. • Visit the SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page to view playlists and listen to our Breakfast Jams shows. • Thanks! |

Santa is Rockin'
• Well the ol' sleigh full of tunes was about 30 minutes late leaving the station this morning. But once we got rolling it was lots of fun! • Miss today's show? Try to catch our Thursday rebroadcast or visit our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page where we archive past Breakfast Jams. • And I'd be remiss if I did not thank (1) all the fabulous musicians for today's music and (2) the wonderful staff at WMXM.org. • Lastly, we will be off for two weeks - back on Tuesday, January 5th. Peace! |
December 8 - Update
Oh, The Weather Outside is Frightful...
• I must admit that curating the music for Breakfast Jams is a much appreciated joy especially during these uncertain and stressful times. I am grateful for the opportunity and hope that you are enjoying the music, too. • Next week will be our 2nd annual Holiday Music Extravaganza and will feature some ol' favorites as well as some music that might be new to you. We'll cover Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas tunes for the kids along and a sleigh full of holiday gems for the "grown ups." • And, remember -- our archived shows are here. |
December 4 - Update
Help Finding the Best in Children's Music
• I know what it challenge it can be to find quality children's music. The main reason is that most of it is being produced by independent artists who, in most cases, lack the capital to fund a widespread marketing plan. So, you've never heard of them. • What's a parent or grandparent to do? I would suggest starting with this list of favorite songs submitted by dozens of children's music radio hosts and producers from across the country and around the world. • Spend a little time researching some of these artists and their songs. It will be worth your time! Click here to see the song list. |
December 1 - Update
Fun Fun Fun!
• I have to admit that this week's show might be my favorite mix so far. Great children's music that adults can appreciate and a wide variety of "grown up" music good for our kid's ears. From Justin Roberts to The Okee Dokee Brothers on the kids side to Phish, The Staple Singers, Norah Jones and Thelonious Monk for the whole family. • Just a reminder that all music played on Breakfast Jams is archived and can be enjoyed again. See our SONGS | PLAYLISTS page. • Schedule Note: We will have two more weeks of Breakfast Jams this month before we take our "Winter Break" for the last two weeks of December. |
November 24 - Update
Blessings Abound
• During this COVID pandemic we all know it is a challenge to see and realize the blessings that we have been given, but I hope we all know that they are there. • Like you, I find music to be way for me to get my mind back on the positive track and connect or reconnect with what is most important: family, friends, healthy relationships and love. • With that, I hope your Thanksgiving is joyous, safe and provides a much needed time for reflection. |
November 17 - Update
Chicago Is...
• "My kind of town" sure is filled with lots o' wonderfully talented singers, songwriters and musicians. • Again, another very diverse mix of songs, artists and genres this week! I realized that our listeners must have a wide range of musical styles they love to enjoy our Breakfast Jams programming. • Next week we will offer a few to spotlight our A TIME FOR THANKSGIVING theme along with other tasty tunes. • Remember to visit our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page for our archived shows. |
November 10 - Update
(What's So Funny 'Bout) Hope and Kindness
• This sure was a diverse mix of music today! From the Beatles and Monty Python to Ben Harper and Wilco we covered a lot of great musical ground today. • I am also reminded about the fact that there is so much great children's music out there, too. Like anything else, it is just a matter of finding it. And that's what we hope to do here at Breakfast Jams. • Just a reminder - if you have any suggestions or songs you would like to hear, let me know. Just visit the REQUEST A SONG page. • Finally, you can always check out our past shows and playlists on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. |
November 3 - Update
Certainly an Election Day Extravaganza!
• Today's program was set up a little differently. After a short musical introduction we did our only "children's music" set before dedicating the rest of the show to the "grown up music" we want out kids to hear. • Fellow DJs tell me that shows are like your family - you love them all, but some are a wee bit more special. And that was the case for me today. Everything felt just right. Song choices, song order, underlying messages, etc... • If you missed it, you can hear the entire show on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page and remember we will rebroadcast today's show on Thursday, November 5. |
October 27 - Update
Today was interesting...
• We were off to a rocky and spooky start this morning as (1) there was no FM signal due to construction on the roof of the radio station building and (2) at WMXM.org Breakfast Jams did not begin until about 35 minutes after our scheduled start time. Who you gonna call?? Hopefully all will be straightened out by our Thursday rebroadcast! • Work has already begun in earnest on my ELECTION EXTRAVAGANZA show for next week. So many great tunes, I may need to request a three hour show. |
October 20 - Update
We're Jammin'
• Thanks to everyone for tuning in this week. It's a joy to know you are out there listening! • Remember to submit any requests via our REQUEST A SONG page. This show is for you, so let me know what you would like to hear. • Next week will be our HALLOWEEN EXTRAVAGANZA. But don't be afraid - it won't get too scary! • And, of course, today's show is archived and available on our SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page. |
October 13 - Update
Going Remote Can Be Fun
• At first I was not so excited about not doing Breakfast Jams live from the studio - it takes longer to produce a pre-recorded show and I thought the LIVE magic would be gone. But after 2 shows, I have grown to enjoy the remote recording process. • This week's entire show is now uploaded with playlist details including playlist start times. Browse the SHOWS | PLAYLISTS page and enjoy. |

Excited to be back!
Please note new day(s) and time • Our last show before the Lake Forest College radio station was closed (due to COVID-19) was March 13. So YES, we are excited to have Breakfast Jams back on the air. • We are pre-recording our shows remotely which has its advantages and disadvantages, but one good outcome is that we are able to now archive our entire show. The Power of Music
• In these uncertain times I find myself calling on music to soothe me and help me stay centered. I hope the same is true for you. There were a couple of times in today's show where I just closed my eyes, sat back, and let the music simply wash over me. It really provided some much needed relief from all the noise. • I suggest Playlists #2 and #8 on our PLAYLISTS page as a great place to start if you are in need of a little escape. • And when I got home today I found out that Lake Forest College has been shut down for an indefinite amount of time. I knew the students were on mid-semester break this week, but was unaware of the shutdown of the campus. I do plan on being there next week. |

Our Musical Tribute to Black History Month, Part 2
• Thanks again for all the requests and artist recommendations for our Black History Month musical celebration. There are always great artists who were not spotlighted (Buddy Guy, Alicia Keyes and Dionne Warwick to name a few) but I still hope you enjoyed listening to the giants of music we did feature. • Just a reminder that all playlists can be viewed and listened to on our PLAYLISTS page. • Finally, next week we will be back with our regular format mixing the best in children's music with "grown up" music we want our kids to be listening to... |
February 20 - Update
More music than I can get to...
• What fun putting together this week's show celebrating and paying tribute to Black History Month. I started thinking that I would be able to gather enough songs/stories for a couple of sets. But before I knew it I had more than enough material for an entire two hour show. • Then I put out the call for requests and recommendations and you did not disappoint. So next week we will dedicate the entire Breakfast Jams to part two of our Black History Month tribute. • Thank you again for your support of our little family friendly Breakfast Jams! If you like the show, please help us spread the word. |

Our Pre-Valentines Day Love Fest
• As often the case, I ended up with more songs that I could fit intro one show which is a good thing, I suspect. But it sure is fun picking and choosing what to play. • Just a friendly reminder that the playlists from today's Breakfast Jams are now available to view and/or listen to on our PLAYLISTS page - plus each playlist from our first ten programs. • Next week we will feature music spotlighting Black History Month. As I mentioned on today's show, there is a lot of great material for kids to hear, so be sure to tune it. • And keep those requests coming. It's easy on our REQUEST A SONG page. |

New VIDEOS Page
On Wednesday, I had the joy of visiting Mr. Kreiner's fourth grade music class with Mrs. Ellis at Lake Bluff (IL) Elementary school. As some of you know I spent the last five years there as the Preschool - 2nd Grade music specialist. I visited this week to share a new video that I thought the students would enjoy. We viewed it, talked about it and I got the feeling they thoroughly enjoyed it. So I decided to create a new VIDEOS page for this site. Children are so familiar with video media that it makes sense for teachers (and parents) to use videos as teaching tools and springboards for all kinds of discussion. |
The first two videos include the one I shared with Mr. Kreiner's class (Argos Christmas Advert 2019) and a fabulous version of "Heroes" the David Bowie song performed by David Byrne (Talking Heads) and an enthusiastic choir. Enjoy! I'll post more...

Quick Reflection
I just got home from today's maiden voyage of our Breakfast Jams radio show and I'm still buzzing from the excitement. All in all, it went rather smoothly for my first attempt at this DJ thing. I knew I had some great tunes picked out but I was a little anxious about the tech side - you see there are no engineers in there helping. I am by myself fully in charge of running the mixing board. No pressure... Then there is the necessary DJ banter. Do I script it out? Or do I just go for it? If you were listening, you probably figured out I just went for it. |
Upcoming Music
